Freddie Mac Employees Raise $32K for Fight Against Breast Cancer

More than 1,600 Freddie Mac employees took part in Denim Day, raising more than $16,000 for the fight against breast cancer. In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, employees broke out the jeans, skirts, shirts and other denim apparel to show their support for the cause. The Freddie Mac Foundation provided a dollar-for-dollar match on all contributions, bringing the grand total going to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to more than $32,000.

Since 1996, companies nationwide have raised more than $44 million for Lee National Denim Day. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation – the nation's leading private funder of research dedicated solely to breast cancer – receives 100 percent of all donations to fund research, education, screening and treatment programs.

Employees also created a "Wall of Honor" of tributes "in memory of" or "in honor of" those who have battled breast cancer.

Some of the facts about breast cancer include:

  • A woman in the U.S. has a 1 in 7 chance of developing breast cancer during her lifetime
  • More women in the U.S. are living with breast cancer than any other cancer, excluding skin cancer
  • Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths for women aged 40-59
  • During 2004, it is estimated that 1,500 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
